Scientists can see around corners using lasers and computers
Ordinarily it's impossible to see an object around a corner, but researchers have devised a system of pulsing lasers and computer?algorithms?that allow them to see the seemingly unseeable.
Superman had X-ray vision, but a pair of scientists has gone one better: seeing around corners.
Skip to next paragraphOrdinarily, the only way to see something outside your line of sight is to stand in front of a mirror or similarly highly reflective surface. Anything behind you or to the side of you reflects light that then bounces off the mirror to your eyes.
But if a person is standing in front of a colored wall, for example, she can't see anything around a corner, because the wall not only absorbs a lot of?the light reflected?from the objects around it, but scatters it in many directions as well. (This is especially true of anything with a matte finish.)
MIT researchers Ramesh Raskar and Andreas Velten got around this issue using a laser, a beam-splitter and a sophisticated algorithm. They fired a laser through the beam-splitter and at a wall, with pulses occurring every 50 femtoseconds. (A femtosecond is a millionth of a billionth of a second, or the time it takes light to travel about 300 nanometers).
When the laser light hits the splitter, half of it travels to the wall, and then bounces to the object around the corner. The light reflects off the object, hitting the wall again, and then returns to a camera. The other half of the beam just goes directly to the camera. This half-beam serves as a reference, to help measure the time it takes for the other photons (particles of light) to return to the camera.
Using a special algorithm to analyze when the returning photons arrive and checking them against the reference beam, the scientists were able?to reconstruct an image?of the object they were trying to see.Velten noted that when analyzing the photons, the ones that hit an object in a room will return sooner than the ones that bounce off a rear wall, and the algorithm accounts for that. They could even see three-dimensional objects, such as a mannequin of a running man used in the experiment.
The resolution isn't, of course, anywhere near as good as?a human eye. It can pick up centimeter-size details at a distance of a few meters,?so it can only resolve relatively large objects. Raskar noted that a shorter exposure time could boost resolution; the camera is currently using exposures measured in picoseconds. But even so, it is a useful method for detecting things that for whatever reason are not directly in the line of sight. Velten also noted that you could use a similar algorithm in reconstructing images of the insides of a backlit object ? something he wants to explore in medical imaging using visible light, which doesn't have all the bad effects of X-rays or the limitations (such as not being able to "see" soft tissues well). Raskar and Velten are no strangers to playing with photons. In December 2011, they demonstrated a camera that could capture frames a trillion times every second.
Robert Boyd, a professor of optics at the University of Rochester, wrote in an email to LiveScience that he is familiar with the duo's "seeing around corners" work and that it is fundamentally sound. How useful it ends up being he isn't sure, though he added that there is no reason it couldn't be implemented in the real world outside of a lab.
For his part, Raskar has always been fascinated with the unseen. "When I was a teenager, it has always bothered me that the world is created around me in real time, that it doesn't exist if I do not look at it," he said. "And so I started thinking about that ? ways tomake the invisible visible."
The team foresees the technique's applications including anything that requires seeing out of the line of sight. "It really changes what we can do with a camera," Raskar said. "All of a sudden, the line of sight is no longer a consideration."
The work is being published online Tuesday (March 20) in the journal Nature Communications.

Brazil judge blocks charges for junta-era kidnaps
SAO PAULO (AP) ? A federal judge on Friday blocked prosecutors' efforts to hold the first trial of a military man for abuses committed during the nation's dictatorship.
Judge Joao Matos ruled that kidnapping charges filed earlier this week against retired army Col. Sebastiao de Moura would go against Brazil's 1979 amnesty law. The amnesty bars prosecutions for politically motivated crimes that were committed during the 1964-85 military regime.
Prosecutors said in an emailed statement that they would appeal. Their decision to pursue the case was applauded this week by the United Nations and humans rights groups.
The judge's decision comes amid a debate in Brazil about the creation of a truth commission to investigate crimes committed under the dictatorship.
President Dilma Rousseff, a former leftist guerrilla, was imprisoned for more than three years during the junta and brutally tortured. In November, she signed into law a bill that established the truth commission, but she has yet to appoint its seven members, who will have two years to complete a report.
The commission still faces resistance from conservative corners in Latin America's largest nation, and more than 400 retired military personnel have signed documents sharply criticizing the measure.
It will have subpoena power, can demand any document it wants from the government and can put witnesses under oath.
But its recommendations are unlikely to result in any prosecutions as long as the amnesty law remains intact. Unlike Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, which also had repressive military regimes, Brazil has never punished military officials accused of human rights abuses.
Earlier this week, prosecutors filed five kidnapping counts against Moura for abductions that they say were carried out during the repression of the leftist Araguaia guerrilla movement. The rural Communist group was crushed by government forces between 1972 and 1975, a period during which 62 of its members were "disappeared."
"To intend, after three decades, to evade the amnesty law, and to reopen a discussion about crimes carried out during the military dictatorship is wrong and is devoid of legal backing," the judge wrote in his ruling.
Murilo Abreu, a spokesman for the federal prosecutors office in Para state, where the charges were filed, said prosecutors were not surprised Matos blocked their efforts "because a lot of people feel it would go against the amnesty law."
Prosecutors argue the kidnappings and the hiding of bodies so the victims were never found are "permanent crimes." Since such crimes continue to the present, they fall outside the 1961-79 period covered by the amnesty law, federal prosecutor Tiago Rabelo said earlier this week.
Rabelo said there is material proof, such as reports from the time and historical records, that show Moura participated in kidnappings. There are also numerous witnesses, he said.
"They all point to (Moura) as the author of the crimes," Rabelo said.
In 2010, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights held the Brazilian government responsible for the forced disappearances of the 62 alleged members of the Araguaia guerrilla movement.
"We're willing to carry out the determination of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights that made clear Brazil's obligation to find the truth ... to give closure to the families that even today have none," said Ubiratan Cazetta, one of the federal prosecutors who brought the charges.
In Geneva on Friday, the United Nations' human rights office said the prosecutors' decision to bring charges was "a long-awaited development towards accountability" for its military dictatorship between 1964 and 1985.
Spokesman Rupert Colville called the effort to bring Moura to trial "a first and crucial step in fighting the impunity" of Brazil's military era, adding that "under international law there should never be an amnesty for serious international crimes."

Italian police arrest terrorism suspect
MILAN (AP) ? Italian police arrested a Moroccan man early Thursday on suspicion of plotting an attack against a Milan synagogue after observing that the suspect had used a Google maps application to case security there, authorities said.
The chief suspect, identified only as a 20-year old worker who had lived in Italy since age 6, was arrested in the northern city of Brescia, 100 kilometers (60 miles) east of Milan. Meanwhile, in Britain, Scotland Yard detained a 40-year-old woman who had been in contact with the suspect to determine if she played any role in the alleged plot.
Brescia Police Chief Lucio Carluccio said anti-terrorism investigators identified the suspect from Internet traffic, including a Facebook page on how to assemble explosives and references in other contexts to holy war, or jihad, a term often used by Islamic extremists against the West.
The suspect had been under investigation for several months, but police moved to arrest him after noting that he was using a Google maps application to zoom in on areas around the synagogue in a way that suggested he was casing the security, not browsing casually, Carluccio said.
"There were a series of clicks to zoom on a police car, and to zoom on the anti-sabotage columns" placed outside the synagogue, Carluccio said.
Authorities confiscated two flags emblazoned with Nazi swastikas at the suspect's residence, along with computers, USB drives, detailed descriptions of how to build a car bomb and the quantities of chemicals needed to make an explosive, he said.
Carluccio said that the suspect appeared to have taken pains to avoid scrutiny, not associating with Islamic fundamentalists and urging users of his Facebook page not to post religious material.
"He paid a lot of attention to his behavior to avoid that anyone would become suspicious," Carluccio said.
In Britain, Scotland Yard said the 40-year-old woman was detained in the early hours of Thursday morning on suspicion of collecting information useful to terrorism. Authorities were searching the residence where she was arrested, and Scotland Yard was in contact with Italian authorities to determine if there was a link between the woman and the alleged plot. Her possible role was unclear.
Italy's interior minister, who is in charge of security services, played down any "particular alarm" about terrorism but said the arrest of the Moroccan was a "very serious activity."
"It was a well done operation in which our police forces worked very well with international bodies," Anna Maria Cancellieri told reporters.
The arrest warrant for the Moroccan was issued by authorities in Sardinia, who first identified the suspect in the course of another investigation.
