Verizon Business Security Blog ? Blog Archive ? 6 Weeks and ...

There were quite a few statistics that jumped out at me in this year?s data breach report, however one of them stuck in my head: 79% of all attacks were classified as ?opportunistic?. We define opportunistic attacks in the report as ?The victim isn?t specifically chosen as a target; they were identified and attacked because they exhibited a weakness the attacker knew how to exploit.? And that got me thinking? If attackers are poking around the Internet and attacking anything that appears weak, that sounds like all of these opportunistic attacks would show up in a honeypot. So I set up a rather simple honeypot with a fake ssh server that records the username and passwords from login attempts. It was attacked almost immediately and the login attempts kept rolling in.

It?s been 6 weeks now and the honeypot has been running most of that time, and I?ve collected 63,303 attempted passwords and usernames through SSH. What makes this list rather interesting is that these are the passwords the attackers are trying ? not the passwords the users are using. There?s an interesting distinction there if we stop and think about it.

The first thing that jumped out at me is that 23.4% of the passwords matched the usernames: bob/bob, alice/alice, root/root kind of thing. I suspect that?s much higher than other network services. If memory serves, adding a user in some *nix flavors (used to?) set the password equal to the username. But rather than go into a top-X list of ?bad? password, I wanted to do some analysis on character sets. Everyone has probably seen the password restrictions being enforced, ?choose a password that contains upper and lower case, numbers and/or special characters? type of thing. So how effective would those be? Can we look at the passwords that attackers are trying to brute-force with and determine which sets would be the best to choose from?charset-venn

The Setup

I started by identifying the four basic character sets:

  • Lower case (a-z)
  • Upper case (A-Z)
  • Numeric (0-9)
  • Special Characters (!@#$, etc)

Then I went through the passwords and identified which specific category they fell into and created (of course) a visualization from that. I chose the trusty Venn diagram to show relative size of each character set and how they relate (any section not labeled is less than 1%).

What?s this tell us?

First take a look at the size of the circles, a whopping 86.7% of the attempted passwords include lower case. Perhaps then, a good strategy (in avoiding brute-force attempts) is to use a password that excludes lower case characters. But take a look at the circle for upper case characters; it?s the smallest of all of them (who would?ve thought that?!)

For example, the #2 ranked ?password? appears 1,125 times in the list, while ?Password? appears 6 times and ?PASSWORD? appears once, (incidentally, ?Password1? appears 50 times).

But let?s take a look at the ?best? character sets. Which character sets had the least amount of attempts against them? The best combination appears to be the union of upper case and special characters with only 78 total password attempts (out of 63,000) from there followed by just upper case passwords coming in with 105 password attempts? ?PASSWORD!? never made it on this list.

Some Caveats

As I mentioned in the beginning, these are attempts against the SSH service. We can only safely assume that this analysis applies to SSH logins and we should probably limit our lessons to that. The dictionaries and tactics used against an open RDP server (for example) may be completely different and they may again be completely different when we talk about attacks against a social networking site or tactics used in cracking a list of passwords offline.

The final caveat I?d like to make is that this is all meaningless against something like key loggers (which were used in 41% of the breaches we studied in 2011), and that the use of stolen credentials appears to be a problem for large and small orgs. In other words, pursuing ?strong? passwords may be much less of a problem than keeping the passwords out of the hands of the attacker at all and we have to keep all of that in perspective.

Finally, I hope to post the data used in this analysis ?real soon now?.? Once that happens, I?ll end this post and include a link.

Racing Vegan With Team Plant Power :

Racing Vegan With Team Plant Power
by Heidi Volpe?

Recently I raced the?12 Hours of Temecula and was lucky enough to race with the talented, just turned pro Sarah Jasen. She nabbed a top 10 spot in the Whiskey 50 and has been tearing it up in the UET Endurance Series here in So Cal for Team Margarita, which she founded.

We raced for So Cal Endurance under the team name, ?Plant Power?. Why? Because we were powered by plants.?We both raced as Vegans, fueling before during and after the race with our own hand made food. For the record, beer is vegan and goes well with Chia Black Bean Burgers!

We competed against 8 all male duo?s and got 2nd place, lapping 3rd place, though we were double lapped by our own team mates, Joel Titus and Mario Correa!? That said we beat all the co-ed teams and completed 15 laps in 11.5 hrs. Plant Power and tenacity goes a long way!

Here?s the run down on how we fueled and feasted before, during and after the race. Most of the recipes we made were from or inspired by Brendan Brazier?s book?Thrive: The Vegan Nutrition Guide to Optimal Performance in Sports and Life.

GEL (Thrive Recipe)

  • 4 dates (I used dates, soaked for a few hours, and used the date water in the next drink)
  • 1/2 cup raw agave nectar
  • 1 Tbsp lime zest
  • 2 tsp lemon zest
  • 1/2 tsp dulse
  • Sea salt to taste
  • I added some guanara

Vita Mix it or use a high speed blender

RECOVERY DRINK?(Thrive Recipe)

  • 4 large Medjool dates (remove pits)
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tbsp hemp protein
  • 2 tbsp sprouted buckwheat (or substitute cooked)
  • Juice from 1/2 lemon
  • Juice from 1/4 lime
  • 1/2 tsp lemon zest
  • 1 tsp ground dulse flakes
  • 1 tsp maca powder
  • 1 tsp greens powder (chlorella or spirulina) I used Vital Greens

Vita Mix it or use a high speed blender

COLD QUINOA SALAD (Heidi Volpe)

  • Some Cooked quinoa, red or regular (this is your base )
  • A few shakes Black Charcoal lava salt to taste
  • A couple handfuls Edamame (shelled)
  • Sesame oil to taste
  • Some red onion finely chopped or green scallions
  • A few salted blanched carrots finely chopped
  • A couple wasabi seaweed sheets cut up with a scissors
  • How ever many you feel like heirloom cherry tomatoes, sliced
  • 1/2 avocado
  • Sting with fresh squeezed lime juice

Mix it up.

SWEET POTATO CHEWS?(Thrive?Recipe)

  • 6 organic sweet potatoes, scrubbed
  • Coconut oil
  • Cinnamon
  • Hemp or pumpkin seeds
  • Puncture with Sweet Potatoes, bake at 375? for 40 minutes,?let them cool, then peel.

Cover a baking sheet with coconut oil (so they don?t stick) slice the potatoes in 1/2 cm uniform circles, arrange on pan

With a pastry brush, use some melted coconut oil, and brush the tops, dust with cinnamon. and bake at 300? for approx 20 min. Experiment with baking times until you reach a desired texture. I also sprinkled on hemp seeds once they were done baking, and have added pumpkin seeds as well. These are a great post work out snack and pack well.

CURRY PIZZA?(Thrive Recipe)

Pizza Crust

  • 2 cups ground sunflower seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • Sea salt to taste

Procedure:?Preheat oven to 300?. In a food processor, process all crust ingredients until mixture starts to ball up. Lightly oil the baking tray with coconut oil. Spread mixture on tray to about 1/4 inch thick (it can be thicker or thinner if you prefer). I used a baking pan so it would hold its shape. Add sauce and toppings, bake. I waited until the sides pulled away from the pan, this is how I knew it was close to done. Spread Spicy Sun-Dried Tomato Marinara Sauce (see below) add topping. Bake for 45 minutes. (This will vary slightly depending on the moisture content of the vegetables and the desired crispness of the pizza. I used pre grilled eggplant, red peppers. olives, and mozzarella almond cheese, oregano and some red onion.

SPICY SUN-DRIED TOMATO MARINARA SAUCE?(Thrive?Recipe)

This sauce can either be served raw or simmered over low heat for about 10 minutes to further blend the flavors. If you choose to heat it, try stirring in 1/2 cup nutritional yeast for a cream-textured sauce, it sorta tastes like cheese.

  • 1 cup sun-dried tomatoe
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 cup chopped tomatoes
  • 1 cup water1/2 cup grated cucumber
  • 3 tbsp hemp oil
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1 tsp rosemary
  • 1/4 tsp thyme
  • Sea salt to taste

Soak the sun-dried tomatoes in the water for 20 minutes. Retain this water. In a food processor, process all ingredients, including sun-dried tomatoes water, until desired consistency is reached.Keep refrigerated for up to 1 week.

Makes about 3 1/2 cups

NOTE: I also added some organic tomato paste to thicken this up a bit because I found the above a little too watery and made the pizza fall apart.

HEALTH & FITNESS: Losing the Baby Weight ? Easy Exercise Tips ...

As mentioned earlier, this blog is more than just about me or my team?s experiences and more in sports, health and fitness. Its a blog for the people, BY the people. And I?m pleased to share with you this amazing article by one of our readers, Katie, on tips which would benefit our female readers and friends. :)

Photograph by Jennifer Bradford

After giving birth, you can begin to shed the pounds you gained during your pregnancy without ever?having to set foot in a gym. There are many ways that you can get exercise at home and around your?neighborhood, which will give you more time and flexibility to attend to your newborn. Taking care of a?baby is a full time job, so having the freedom to squeeze in a workout at any available time of day right in?the comfort and privacy of your living room is both convenient and easy.

Before you begin an exercise routine, be sure that you listen to your body signals so you don?t overwork?it. Right after you give birth, your body needs some time to adjust and recover from pregnancy and being?in labor. Your immediate goal should be to incorporate healthy habits into your lifestyle, rather than trying?to reach a certain goal on the scale. Even though many celebrities are able to shed the baby weight at?an incredibly fast rate doesn?t mean that this is ideal, so don?t worry about trying to match their standards.?Gradually you?ll be able to increase the duration and intensity of your workouts as you get stronger and?fitter, and the results will start to show in a healthy way.

For most women, light exercise can be incorporated into your post-pregnancy lifestyle within several?weeks of getting birth, and usually after six weeks or more for C-section births. Always consult with?your doctor and discuss your plans for exercise and weight loss after giving birth. Your doctor answered?all of your questions concerning labor and delivery and provided advice on options like cord blood and?immunizations, and your doctor can do the same for you concerning your lifestyle habits and different diet?and exercise options. Once you?ve gotten your doctor?s approval, it?s time to burn some calories!

MOVE AROUND

To start out, try moving more during your day by walking and doing light activities around the house, like?cooking, cleaning, and gardening. Taking walks around the neighborhood while pushing your baby in its?stroller is a nice way to spend time together while getting some good exercise. Eventually you can also?switch to a running or jogging routine several times a week. Wear a pedometer so you can keep track?of your steps each day. This will help motivate you to move more, and it helps you to see the progress?you?re making ?throughout the day. Set a reasonable daily goal, and try to meet it, or even surpass it if
you have extra energy.

SWIM

If you have a pool, try swimming laps or treading water to burn calories. Swimming and water aerobics?are great calorie burners because you have to engage so many different muscle groups to keep yourself?afloat and move through the water. You?ll work your core, legs, glutes, and arms, and it doesn?t take?much time to get a good calorie burn. Visit a local community center with a pool if you don?t have your?own.

AT HOME EXERCISES

At home, you can turn your living room into a mini home gym. Roll out a mat and do sets of push-ups,?crunches, squats, lunges, jumping jacks, punches, kicks, leg lifts, and some stretching. Try lifting light?weights or using a resistance band to add toning and sculpting moves to your workout, which will burn?calories and build muscle to help you burn more fat all day long. Yoga and Pilates are other great ways to?firm your body and lengthen your muscles, increasing flexibility and giving you a long, lean look. You can?either create your own routine, or follow along with a workout DVD. Some are even designed especially?for new mothers!

Overall, try to keep your workouts fun so that you?ll stay motivated. Listen to fun, upbeat music while you?exercise, or try a dance-based routine like Zumba or belly-dancing (great for toning up your midsection!).?Don?t worry if you don?t have time to do a long workout every day. Even making small changes, like going?up and down the stairs more often during the day, will help you to burn extra calories. Take advantage?of your baby?s naptime to squeeze in some exercise, and before you know it, the pounds will start to?melt away.

As long as you stay committed, you?ll get back to your pre-pregnancy weight again and you?ll?increase your levels of fitness and energy along the way; making you a happier, healthier mom! :)

(AP) ? Google unveiled its attempt to catch up to Apple and Amazon in the growing market for tablet computers. It also provided a titillating glimpse at its vision of a digital future through the mind-boggling lens of Internet-connected glasses.

The debut of a long-anticipated tablet computer bearing Google's brand and equipped with its latest operating software kicked off an annual conference for about 6,000 computer programmers.

Although the tablet drew plenty of applause, the biggest crowd-pleasing moment came near the end of a nearly two-hour performance Wednesday when Google conjured a scene worthy of a "Mission Impossible" movie.

After Google co-founder Sergey Brin trotted on stage during the middle of a presentation, he cut away to a live video feed showing a group of skydivers the company hired to jump out of a blimp hovering about 7,000 feet above downtown San Francisco.

The skydivers were wearing a pair of Internet-connected glasses. That allowed the audience inside to see what the skydivers were seeing as they parachuted on to the roof of the building where the conference was being held.

The glasses are still a work in progress, although Google gave U.S. programmers attending the conference a chance to order a $1,500 prototype that they can start experimenting with early next year.

The Google-branded tablet, called the Nexus 7, will start shipping next month in a direct challenge to Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire. The tablet also could appeal to consumers looking for a less expensive, less sophisticated alternative to Apple Inc.'s iPad.

The Nexus 7 is designed specifically for Google Play, an online store that sells movies, music, books, apps and other content. That mirrors Amazon's strategy with the Kindle Fire, although Amazon's strength in online retailing has seeded its store with a more extensive selection than Google Play. Amazon declined comment.

The size and price of the Nexus 7 also matches the Kindle Fire. Both have 7-inch screens and sell for $199. The Nexus 7 is slightly lighter at about 0.75 pound, compared with the Kindle Fire's 0.9 pound.

By contrast, the iPad's screen measures nearly 10 inches diagonally and weighs 1.44 pounds. Apple sells its latest models for $499 and up, though an older version is available for $399.

Customers can start ordering the Nexus 7 through Google on Wednesday, initially in the U.S., Canada and Australia. The device won't ship until mid-July.

Google's announcement that it's putting its brand on a tablet comes a week after Microsoft Corp. did the same thing. Both moves risk alienating Google's and Microsoft's hardware partners. Those companies, in turn, could be less inclined to work closely with Google and Microsoft.

The Nexus 7's price looks like a relative bargain, given that it boasts more features than the Kindle, including a front-facing camera with 1.2 megapixels. The Kindle is believed to be a roughly break-even product for Amazon at $199. Samsung Electronics Co. sells a tablet similar to Google's for $250.

Andrew Rassweiler, an analyst with IHS iSuppli, said he suspects Google will be selling the Nexus 7 at a loss.

Google has previously put its own brand on a flagship line of "Nexus" smartphones. But that market is more mature than the tablet market, and there was less risk of Google alienating partners, particularly because it didn't price the phones lower than the norm.

Much like the Nexus phones, the Nexus 7 tablet will be a showcase for a new version of Google's Android operating system ? this one called Jelly Bean.

Although the tablet carries the Google brand, the machine will be made by AsusTek Computer Inc. Google recently expanded into the device-making business with its $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility, but the company has stressed that it intends to continue to rely on Asus and other manufacturers that have embraced Android.

Jeff Orr, an analyst with ABI Research, said Microsoft's announcement of its Surface tablet last week and Google's Nexus 7 add up to a "troubling" situation for tablet makers such as Samsung Electronics Co., which makes the Galaxy line.

When a software-supplying partner turns around and puts out its own hardware product, "is that a partner or an enemy?" Orr asked.

Orr also questioned whether Google's strategy of pricing the tablet low is really going to win it any fans in the long term. Apple, he noted, dominates the tablet market with a product that's expensive but works well.

There are already other Android-powered tablets on the market, but none have proven nearly as popular as the iPad or Kindle Fire. That has raised worries at Google as more people rely on tablets to surf the Internet.

For Google, advertising dollars are at stake. If Apple retains its dominance and other players such as Amazon and Microsoft gobble up the rest of the sales, they could set up their operating systems in ways that de-emphasize Google's Internet search engine and other services. Apple develops its own system, while Amazon modifies Android for use in Kindles. Microsoft's will run on a new version of Windows.

Apple already has announced that the next version of the iPad operating system will abandon Google's digital maps as the built-in navigation system. That shift could cause neighborhood merchants to spend less money advertising on Google.

The iPad currently has about 68 percent of the tablet market, according to Forrester Research. The research firm expects the increasing competition to whittle the iPad's share to 53 percent in 2016, with Android-powered tablets at about 30 percent and Windows tablets accounting for the remainder. Forrester predicted 760 million tablets will be in use by 2016.

"Google's user base for music, books, and movies is not nearly as strong as Apple or Amazon, so it will take time to build a strong customer base" for the Nexus 7, predicted Forrester analyst Frank Gillett.

He also said the Nexus 7 and other Android tablets are at a disadvantage because computer programmers still haven't built as many compelling applications for that platform as they have for the iPad.

In another expansion into consumer electronics, Google also announced a home entertainment device called Nexus Q that is similar to Apple TV, a small box that can stream music and movies over Internet connections. The Nexus Q sends content from your personal collection or YouTube to your existing TV and speaker systems. You control it through a separate Android phone or tablet.

The Nexus Q, which Google is calling the world's first "social streaming device," will be available in July in the U.S. initially and sell for $299. Apple TV currently sells for just $99. Other Internet-streaming devices, such as the Roku, that connect to TVs sell for even less than that.

The Internet-connected glasses that Google demonstrated won't be cheap either, although Brin told reporters Wednesday that the company plans to charge consumers significantly less than the $1,500 that developers had to pay for prototypes. The glasses, which Google is calling Project Glass, probably won't be released to the mass market until early 2014, Brin said.

"It's not a commodity product," Brin said. "We view this as a premium sort of thing."

Google began developing the Internet-connected glasses in a secret research lab more than two years ago and announced what it was working on in April. Wednesday's presentation marked the first extended demonstration of how the glasses might work.

Also on Wednesday, Google unveiled a new search tool to help you get the right information at the right time on your mobile device. Called Google Now, the tool will be part of Jelly Bean, which will be available in mid-July. Some devices, including the Galaxy Nexus, will get the upgrade automatically over the air.

With Google Now, if you say "traffic," for example, it will look at your usual commute to work and show you alternative routes if there's a lot of traffic. It will tell you the scores of your favorite sports teams automatically, and it will keep you up to date on flight statuses if you are flying somewhere.

The feature bears resemblance to the Siri virtual assistant on Apple's iPhone.

Jelly Bean will also come with the ability to share photos by tapping two phones together.

Love Helps: How Relationships and Marriage Affect Health ...

Love often gets a bad reputation for being painful.? I?m sure that anyone who?s experienced heartbreak can attest to the fact that sometimes, ?love hurts.? However, as this infographic shows, quantitatively speaking, love can help us too.? Besides the obvious plusses of sharing employer benefits adding an extra income, there are some surprising health benefits as well. For example, individuals with solid relationships tend to live at least 3.7 years longer than those that don?t, and single people spend twice as much time in the hospital as married people.

love helps infographic

What struck me the most was that some experts say the mental well-being of a marriage is equivalent to getting $100,000 more a year. So while at times you may feel like the only thing you need to be happy is more money, statistics show that taking some time instead to reconnect with your loved ones could be even more valuable.

Big Time Rush, 'Windows Down' -- New Song

The new single from Los Angeles boy band Big Time Rush, hit digital outlets earlier this week. 'Windows Down' is the first single off the bands upcoming third studio album, which is still currently untitled. The song reached number 62 on the iTunes sales chart within six hours of the songs release.

After the release of the music video for 'Windows Down', fans (and new listeners) instantly could tell that 'Windows Down' was meant for the summer. With the band shooting the music video in Maui, Hawaii, everything about the song screams to fans that it's summer and it's time to have a good time. 'Windows Down' samples 'Song 2' from English rock band, Blur. The song was originally intended for use by pop singer, Ke$ha, for her song 'Woo-Hoo', but was then passed from her over to BTR. Using the catchy chorus from 'Song 2' to their advantage, Big Time Rush adds into the chorus and creates their own unique twist that makes the song's chorus just as catchy. "Woo-hoo! All the windows down. Woo-hoo! When I'm rolling through your town. Woo-hoo! Saying yeah, yeah. Woo-hoo! Saying yeah, yeah." The band also provides electronic aspects to the track to make the song into more of a dance song instead of a normal pop song. With the lyrics, high-tempo dance beat, and some sample help from one of the most well-known rock songs in the past 15 years,

'Windows Down' has potential to be a huge summer song this year. 'Windows Down' is available on digital outlets now. There is currently no scheduled release date for Big Time Rush's new album. Catch BTR on tour this summer with Cody Simpson and Rachel Crow. Fans can hear 'Windows Down' on AOL Radio's Teen Pop by Cambio Radio station.

New hormonal gel combination shows promise as reversible birth control for men

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Male hormonal contraceptives applied daily to the skin reduce sperm production, finds a new study presented June 25 at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston.

Very low sperm counts resulted for about 89 percent of men using a new combination of hormones, the authors reported. They combined a transdermal (skin) gel containing the male hormone testosterone and a gel containing a new synthetic progestin called Nestorone.

"This is the first time that testosterone and Nestorone have been applied to the skin together to deliver adequate amounts of hormones that suppress sperm production," said principal investigator Christine Wang, MD, professor, Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (LA BioMed). "Men can use transdermal gels at home -- unlike the usual injections and implants, which must be given in a health care provider's office."

Prior studies of male contraceptives that combined testosterone and progestin used progestin pills, implants or shots, according to Wang. In men, progestin increases the contraceptive effectiveness of testosterone. Both testosterone and progestin work together to turn off production of reproductive hormones controlling the production of sperm, she said. Furthermore, Wang said, unlike other progestins studied as male contraceptives, Nestorone has no androgenic (male hormone) activity. Androgenic activity may cause side effects such as acne and changes in good and bad cholesterol.

In this preliminary study, the investigators randomly assigned 99 healthy men to use one of three unidentified transdermal treatments every day for six months. The assigned treatment was either a gel containing 10 grams of testosterone plus a placebo ("dummy") gel, or the same testosterone gel plus a gel containing either 8 or 12 milligrams (mg) of Nestorone.

Fifty-six men completed at least 20 weeks of treatment and adhered to the study protocol, according to the abstract. Only 23 percent of men who received testosterone alone obtained a sperm concentration less than 1 million sperm per milliliter, "a level that is compatible with very low pregnancy rates," Wang said. For the testosterone-progestin combinations, sperm counts reached that level in 88 to 89 percent of men, depending on the progestin dose.

In addition, complete absence of sperm occurred in significantly more men receiving combined testosterone and progestin than testosterone alone: 78 and 69 percent (8 and 12 mg of progestin, respectively) versus 23 percent for testosterone only.

"The combination of testosterone with Nestorone had few adverse effects," Wang said. "It warrants further study as a male contraceptive."

Nestorone is an investigational new drug being developed by the Population Council, a nonprofit organization in New York City, which supplied this drug for the study. Besins Pharma provided the testosterone gel. Grant funding came from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development through the Contraceptive Clinical Trials Network. The University of Washington, Seattle, also participated in this study.

Does Mars' interior hold huge reservoirs of water? Martian meteorites say yes.

Some parts of Mars' interior are as wet as that of Earth, a new study finds.

By Space.com Staff,?Space.com / June 25, 2012

The interior of Mars holds vast reservoirs of water, with some spots apparently as wet as Earth's innards, scientists say.

The finding upends previous studies, which had estimated that the Red Planet's internal water stores were scanty at best ? something of a surprise, given that liquid water apparently?flowed on the Martian surface?long ago.

"It?s been puzzling why previous estimates for the planet?s interior have been so dry," co-author Erik Hauri, of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, said in a statement. "This new research makes sense and suggests that volcanoes may have been the primary vehicle for getting water to the surface."

The scientists examined two Martian meteorites that formed in the planet's mantle, the layer under the crust. These rocks landed on Earth about 2.5 million years ago, after being blasted off the Red Planet by a violent impact.

Using a technique called secondary ion mass spectrometry, the team determined that the mantle from which the meteorites derived contained between 70 and 300 parts per million (ppm) of water. Earth's mantle, for comparison, holds roughly 50-300 ppm water, researchers said.

"The results suggest that water was incorporated during the formation of?Mars?and that the planet was able to store water in its interior during the planet?s differentiation," Hauri said.

Some of this water apparently made its made to the surface in the ancient past. NASA's?Spirit and Opportunity rovers, which landed on the Red Planet in 2004, have found plenty of evidence that Mars was far warmer and wetter billions of years ago than it is today.

The two golf-cart-size robots have even spotted signs of ancient hydrothermal systems, suggesting that some places on the Red Planet once had both water and an energy source ? two key ingredients for the existence of life as we know it.

While the new results should help scientists better understand Mars and its history, they could also shed light on the evolution of large, rocky bodies in a more general sense, researchers said.

"Not only does this study explain how Mars got its water, it provides a mechanism for hydrogen storage in all the terrestrial planets at the time of their formation," lead author Francis McCubbin, of the University of New Mexico, said in a statement.

The study was published in the journal Geology on June 15.

Bad Company

Over the years, Romney?s political opponents have exploited the public?s misgivings. They?ve argued that he didn?t really earn the money he made, that he put profits before the public interest, and that he enriched himself at the expense of ordinary people. The harshest of these critiques was a video distributed this year by a PAC supporting Newt Gingrich. It began by extolling the values of free enterprise: ?Capitalism made America great. Free markets, innovation, hard work.? But it argued that Romney had subverted these values. Instead of building enterprises and communities, he had raided and stripped family businesses, ?dumping? their stock and ?playing the system for a quick buck.? Instead of improving products, he had cheapened them. Instead of hiring people, he had fired them to squeeze out extra profits. Instead of helping his country, he had ?sent jobs overseas.? Instead of nurturing companies, he had loaded them with debt and siphoned out the money. Instead of serving small investors, he had suckered and fleeced them. Instead of sharing the pain when workers lost their jobs and investors lost their savings, he and his pals had always managed ?to turn the misfortunes of others into their own enormous financial gains.? He had betrayed every moral principle of business: loyalty, quality, service, prudence, stewardship, risk.

How to Lose Stubborn Weight | How Can You Lose Weight

Most Popular Weight Loss Products

If you spend any amount of time watching TV or thumbing through magazines, you?re going to come across some diet program that looks like it is the answer to your prayers. Often, these diet programs are little more than a method of making the company money, not of helping you to lose weight. Think about it in this way, the diets that are given to you by these weight loss companies would quickly put them out of business if they actually worked and helped you to lose weight permanently. Many times, they are something that is meant to look good on the outside but unfortunately, while they do cause weight loss to occur, the weight returns (usually with interest!) when you come off the program. Because of good advertising, however, you continue to buy the products faithfully.

There are also plenty of fad diets which are not necessarily promoted by the weight loss industry.

Many of these diets revolve around cutting things out of your diet drastically, such as carbohydrates or fats. A good example of this is the Atkins diet, one of the most popular diets in the world. Many people have wondered whether this is a healthy way for you to eat or not. What the Atkins diet does is to put your body in a state that is known as ketosis because you are reducing the amount of carbohydrates that you?re eating so drastically that your body begins burning fat for fuel. Does it work? It absolutely works and it can help you lose weight very quickly. Unfortunately, ketosis also uses some of your organs for fuel as well. After all, ketosis is something that diabetics try to avoid for their very life. Putting your body into this state is definitely not healthy.

Another type of diet that is very popular is low-fat diets.

These tend to cut all of the fats out of our diet because of the assumption that if we eat fat, we get fat. It certainly is true that many of the fats that we eat are bad for us and some of them are outright atrocious. You might be surprised to learn, however, that some fat in our diet is absolutely essential for digestion and health. In addition, there are some good fats that we can use in order to lose weight. Do you want to eat a healthy fat that will take weight off your body naturally? Try eating a couple of spoonfuls of raw, organic coconut oil on a daily basis. It may seem odd, but it works.

Instead of falling for every fad diet that is out there, you should simply try eating a healthy, balanced diet and get a little bit of exercise. As you begin to see results from this way of living, you will discover a truth that many dieters never learn. It?s not about fad diets, prepackaged foods or going to extremes.

Research has shown that the best thing you can do to lose weight is to join a group of other people who have the same problem and share the same goal. Harvard University have proved that weight loss is easy when you are surrounded by a support group of like minded people.
