Celebs, Kimmel join forces in faux movie trailer

ABC

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

What do you do after the trailer for a movie you never made gets 20 million hits on YouTube? That's a question Jimmy Kimmel had to answer after his "Movie: The Movie" star-studded parody racked up huge numbers of clicks following its post-2012 Oscars premiere.

But he knew what had to be done: Make another one!

"When you have a big success in Hollywood, there's only one reasonable thing you can do, and that is is cheapen it with a sequel," he told his "Live!" audience Sunday night after the 2013 awards fest. Then he premiered ... "Movie: The Movie: 2V."

Yet again the world is in danger, and it's up to Kimmel to organize the forces of good to save everybody. But this time there's no meteor hurtling toward the planet -- instead, sexy, deadly vampires, mummies and leprechauns have unleashed the "sexpocalypse," and no one is safe. Kimmel plays the double-eyepatch-wearing leader of an "Avengers"-esque task force that is the Earth's only hope.

Here's what you can expect from the 7-minute-plus trailer:

  • Jessica Chastain, watching the carnage, noting "Teenage girls and their weird moms don't stand a chance."
  • Gerard Butler imitating Liam Neeson's fierce, family-saving character from "Taken."
  • Brian Cranston playing the piano with his face.
  • John Krasinski morphing into a crime-fighting crustacean. "It's shrimpin' time," he gloats.
  • President Oprah Winfrey.
  • Kimmel's nemesis Matt Damon, in a full-body motion-capture suit eating a sandwich, kind of.
  • Amanda Seyfried singing and breakdancing in a "Les Miserables" dress.
  • A giant Channing Tatum saving the world.
  • Samuel L. Jackson toppling over an even more enormous Jenga game, also to save the world.

Yes, there's some swearing, but it's bleeped out. And, as Kimmel promises at the end of the video, Monday night's show will feature "a special behind-the-scenes look at the making of 'Movie: The Movie: 2V' for film buffs."

"Jimmy Kimmel Live!" airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on ABC.

News Summary: Professional Chinese hackers

9-TO-5: Internet experts say the persistence of Chinese hacking attacks point to the employ of professional cyberspies. Hacker teams regularly began work, for the most part, at 8 a.m. Beijing time. And Chinese hackers take the weekend off.

THE BACKGROUND: Accusations of state-sanctioned hacking took center stage this past week following a detailed report by a U.S.-based Internet security firm Mandiant. That fueled growing suspicion that the Chinese military is stealing national defense secrets, harassing dissidents and pilfering information from foreign companies that could be worth millions of dollars

DENIAL: Beijing hotly denies such accusations of official involvement in massive cyberattacks against foreign targets.

LG acquires webOS from HP, plans to use it in smart TV platform

Here's a wild one -- webOS has been revived, and the suitor may surprise you. LG has reportedly lifted the troubled webOS unit from HP's hands, but instead of using it in future smartphones or tablets, it's planning to inject the operating system across its smart TV portfolio -- finally adding a layer of truth to a rumor we first spotted in October of last year. The deal includes the source code for webOS, "related documentation, engineering talent, and related webOS websites." Moreover, LG's procuring HP licenses for use with its webOS wares, not to mention patents that HP had originally gained from Palm. Not surprisingly, dollars and cents aren't being publicly discussed, but we'll be sure to clue you in on any more specifics as we get them.

Sanctions relief offered in Iranian nuclear talks

(AP) ? World powers, fearful of scuttling negotiations beginning this week with Iran, are offering the Islamic republic some small new sanctions relief in return for curbing its nuclear program. But officials warned Monday that it's unlikely that any compromise will be reached soon.

Negotiators set low expectations for the latest round of high-level diplomatic talks to begin Tuesday in Kazakhstan's largest city ? the first since last June's meeting in Moscow that threatened to derail delicate efforts to convince Iran to stop enriching uranium to a level close to that used for nuclear warheads.

The stakes couldn't be higher: the Obama administration is pushing for diplomacy to solve the impasse but has not ruled out the possibility of military intervention in Iran to prevent it from acquiring a nuclear weapon. And Israel has threatened it will use all means to stop Iran from being able to building a bomb, potentially as soon as this summer, raising the specter of a possible Mideast war.

Tehran maintains it is enriching uranium only to make reactor fuel and medical isotopes, and insists it has a right to do so under international law. It has signaled it does not intend to stop, despite harsh international sanctions on its oil and financial sectors, and U.N. nuclear inspectors last week confirmed Iran has begun a major upgrade of its program at the country's main uranium enrichment site.

The clerical regime's refusal frustrates the international community, which has responded by slapping Iran with a host of economic sanctions that U.S. officials said have, among other things, cut the nation's daily oil output by 1 million barrels and slashed its employment rate. But, in a twist, negotiators now hope that easing some of the sanctions will make Tehran more agreeable to halting production of 20 percent enriched uranium ? the highest grade of enrichment that Iran has acknowledged and one that experts say could be turned into warhead grade in a matter of months.

Negotiators from the six world powers ? United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany ? also want Iran to suspend enrichment in its underground Fordo nuclear facility, and to ship its stockpile of high-grade uranium out of the country.

"We are pleased that they have come together for talks because it's been eight months since Moscow. We wanted to come together for talks earlier than this," said Michael Mann, spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who is leading the negotiations. "What's important to us is that they engage in these negotiations and take seriously what we've put on the table.

"No one is expecting everyone to walk out of here with a deal, but if we can have some forward momentum and they can show a willingness to take a confidence-building step, that's very important," Mann told reporters on Monday. He described the world powers' newest gambit as "a good offer" but declined to say what it would include.

A senior U.S. official at the talks said some sanctions relief would be part of the offer to Iran but also refused to detail it. The new relief is part of a package that the U.S. official said included "substantive changes ? whether you'd call them super-substantial, I'll leave to history." The official acknowledged reports earlier this month that sanctions would be eased to allow Iran's gold trade to progress, but would neither confirm nor deny they are included in the new relief offer, and spoke only on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive diplomatic talks more candidly.

But at the same time, the senior U.S. official also noted the possibility that Iran would face new pressures if it fails to comply with international concerns. That could include toughening the impact of the sanctions already in place by enforcing them more strictly, or imposing new sanctions altogether as Iran moves forward with its program.

Western powers have hoped that the Iranian public would suffer under sanctions so badly that the government would feel a moral obligation to slow its nuclear program. The U.S. official attributed the decline in Iranian currency, the rial, and the decrease in oil production to Western sanctions.

Iran has been unimpressed with earlier offers by the powers to provide it with medical isotopes and lift sanctions on spare parts for civilian airliners, and new bargaining chips that Tehran sees as minor are likely to be snubbed as well. Iran insists, as a starting point, that world powers must recognize the republic's right to enrich uranium.

In a sign that Tehran is in no hurry to reach a compromise, Iran's foreign minister has no plans to meet with officials of the International Atomic Energy Agency Tuesday when he visits Vienna to attend an unrelated conference. Diplomats in Vienna suggested the decision by Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi reflects a deadlock on the agency's attempts to probe Tehran's atomic work. IAEA officials recently suggested related talks needed to pause after dragging on without results. The diplomats demanded anonymity because their information was confidential.

Still, last week, Salehi spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said the Almaty talks could provide an important "opportunity" so long as the two sides were dealing with each other as equals and making offers of "same level, same weight."

"We will offer ways for removing possible concerns and ambiguities to show our goodwill, if Western countries, especially the U.S., fully recognize the nuclear rights of countries, which shows their goodwill," Mehmanparast told reporters in Tehran.

In London, Secretary of State John Kerry said an Iran with nuclear weapons was "simply unacceptable" and warned the time limit for a diplomatic solution was running out.

"As we have repeatedly made clear, the window for a diplomatic solution simply cannot remain open forever," said Kerry, on his first international tour as America's top diplomat. "But it is open today. It is open now and there is still time but there is only time if Iran makes the decision to come to the table and to negotiate in good faith. We are prepared to negotiate in good faith, in mutual respect, in an effort to avoid whatever terrible consequences could follow failure and so the choice really is in the hands of the Iranians. And we hope they will make the right choice."

An analysis released Monday by the International Crisis Group concluded that the web of international sanctions have become so entrenched in Iran's political and economic systems that they cannot be easily lifted piece-by-piece. It found that Tehran's clerical regime has begun adapting its policy to the sanctions, despite their crippling effect on the Iranian public. Doing so, the analysis concluded, has divided the public's anger "between a regime viewed as incompetent and an outside world seen as uncaring."

"As far as Iran is concerned, it is too late to reverse course. The massive sanctions regime is in place, warts and all, and not about to be removed," the analysis concluded. It recommended that the world powers "devise a package of incentives, including some less than complete degree of relief, that is politically as well as legally achievable and that genuinely addresses Iranian concerns."

Several diplomats in Almaty said any major breakthrough in the negotiations likely won't come until after Iran's presidential elections in June ? especially if the world powers refuse to offer anything that Tehran can use to show as some kind of major concession by the West.

Coach's longtime CEO Frankfort leaving in 2014

Coach's longtime CEO Lew Frankfort, who transformed what had been a small leather goods business into a global luxury brand, will step down next year. He will be replaced by its current head of international operations.

The upscale purse and accessories seller said Thursday that Victor Luis, who spearheaded the company's fast growth into Asia, will become CEO in January.

Frankfort will be executive chairman.

Frankfort, 66, joined Coach in 1979 as a vice president of business development. Named chairman and CEO in 1995, he shepherded Coach through an initial public offering in 2000 and oversaw the company's growth into a global luxury business. Coach now runs more than 500 stores in North America and has locations around the world.

Luis, 46, became president of Coach's international business a year ago after joining the New York-based company in 2006. Coach on Thursday appointed him president of the company and chief commercial officer, and named him to the board.

The management change comes as Coach grapples with a challenging global economy and steep price cuts by competitors. The handbag maker just finished a muted holiday season, with revenue at North American stores open at least a year down 2 percent during its holiday quarter. That's a key indicator of retailer's health.

Coach is taking steps to rev up growth. It is trying to make its stores more inviting by opening shoe salons inside its shops, highlighting its footwear collections. And to deal with growing competition from rivals like Michael Kors Holdings Inc., Coach last year launched its Legacy collection of handbags inspired by classic styles in the company's archives.

"Coach is a great company with exceptional brand and business equities and a strong and seasoned leadership team," said Luis in a statement. "Together with Lew, we will build upon the company's strong foundation, leveraging the global opportunity, while continuing to evolve the Coach brand."

Shares slipped 10 cents to $48.67 in premarket trading Thursday.

Facebook says it was a target of sophisticated hacking

SAN FRANCISCO/LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Facebook Inc said on Friday hackers had infiltrated some of its employees' laptops in recent weeks, making the world's No.1 social network the latest victim of a wave of cyber attacks, many of which have been traced to China.

It said none of its users' data was compromised in the attack, which occurred after a handful of employees visited a website last month that infected their machines with so-called malware, according to a post on Facebook's official blog released just before the three-day U.S. President's Day weekend.

"As soon as we discovered the presence of the malware, we remediated all infected machines, informed law enforcement, and began a significant investigation that continues to this day," Facebook said.

It was not immediately clear why Facebook waited until now to announce the incident. Facebook declined to comment on the reason or the origin of the attack.

A security expert at another company with knowledge of the matter said he was told the Facebook attack appeared to have originated in China.

The attack on Facebook, which says it has more than 1 billion members, underscores the growing threat of cyber attacks aimed at a broad variety of targets.

Twitter, the micro blogging social network, said earlier this month it had been hacked and that about 250,000 user accounts were potentially compromised, with attackers gaining access to information, including user names and email addresses.

Newspaper websites, including those of The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal, have also been infiltrated. Those attacks were attributed by the news organizations to Chinese hackers targeting coverage of China.

Earlier this week, U.S. President Barack Obama issued an executive order seeking better protection of the country's critical infrastructure from cyber attacks.

"INFILTRATED"

Facebook noted in its blog post that it was not alone in the attack, and that "others were attacked and infiltrated recently as well," although it did not specify who.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation declined to comment, while the U.S. Department of Homeland Security did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

In its blog post, Facebook described the attack as a "zero-day" attack, considered to be among the most sophisticated and dangerous types of computer hacks. Zero-day attacks, which are rarely discovered or disclosed by their targets, are costly to launch and often suggest government involvement.

While Facebook said no user data was compromised, the incident could raise consumer concerns about privacy and the vulnerability of personal information stored within the social network.

Facebook has made several privacy missteps in the past because of the way it handled user data. It settled a privacy investigation with federal regulators in 2011.

According to one person familiar with the situation, the type of information on the employee laptops that were compromised included "snippets" of Facebook source code and employee emails.

Facebook said it spotted a suspicious file and traced it back to an employee's laptop. After conducting a forensic examination of the laptop, Facebook said it identified a malicious file, then searched company-wide and identified "several other compromised employee laptops".

Another person briefed on the matter said the first Facebook employee had been infected via a website where coding strategies were discussed.

The company also said it identified a previously unseen attempt to bypass its built-in cyber defenses and that new protections were added on February 1.

Because the attack used a third-party website, it might have been an early-stage attempt to penetrate as many companies as possible.

If they followed established patterns, the attackers would learn about the people and computer networks at all the infected companies. They could then use that data in more targeted attacks to steal source code and other intellectual property.

Another fear for such a popular website is that hackers could use central controls to infect wide swathes of its user base at once.

In January 2010, Google reported it had been penetrated via a "zero-day" flaw in an older version of the Internet Explorer Web browser. The attackers were seeking source code and were also interested in Chinese dissidents. Google reduced its operations in China as a result.

State Of The Union: Alan Keyes Takes Obama To Task For Definition Of Citizen

OBAMA AND RUBIO: NEITHER ACCEPTS GOD'S AUTHORITY

Exclusive: Alan Keyes takes president to task for definition of 'citizen'

By Alan Keyes @ WND

On Tuesday of this week we should have commemorated the birthday of Abraham Lincoln. I spent the day working on an article, since posted on my blog, reflecting on the profound acknowledgment of God?s authority Lincoln bequeathed to the nation in the words of his Second Inaugural Address. I refer, of course, to the famous passage in which Lincoln spoke on the supposition

?? that American slavery is one of those offenses which, in the providence of God, must needs come, ? and that He gives to both North and South this terrible war as the woe due to those by whom the offense came. ? Yet if God wills that it continue ? as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said ?the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.??

Tragically for us, though the political spokesmen of our day mention God when it suits their purposes, they never accept the simple logic of God?s authority, as Lincoln did. Their lip-service inevitably reveals their abandonment of the stark premise of true reverence Christ left to us in his prayer to God in the Garden of Gethsemane: ?Not my will but thine be done.? In contrast with Lincoln, the words of our un-statesmanlike politicians always betray the fact that they regard human will as the only real judge, the ultimate arbiter of human affairs.

We see this in Barack Obama?s peculiarly deceitful description of citizenship in the peroration of his State of the Union Address this week:

?? as Americans we all share the same proud title: We are citizens. It?s a word that?doesn't?just describe our nationality or legal status. It describes the way we?re made. It describes what we believe. It captures the enduring idea that this country only works when we accept certain obligations to one another and to future generations; that our rights are wrapped up in the rights of others; and that well into our third century as a nation, it remains the task of us all, as citizens of these United States, to be the authors of the next great chapter in our American story.?

Obama has refused to deal candidly with the question of citizenship as it arises in the constitutional provision that raises questions about his own tenure as president of the United States. So it?s more than ironic that Obama should purport to speak as an authority on the meaning of the term. However, he slyly addresses the controversy when he says that the word ?citizen? ? doesn't just describe our nationality or legal status. It describes the way we?re made.? In fact, ?nature? is the word that refers to the way we are made, not ?citizen.? Citizenship is ordinarily an artifact of human law. But according to the Declaration of Independence, the document that declares ?what we believe? as Americans, not human law but ?the laws of nature and of nature?s God? prescribe the way that we are made. Our rights, therefore, do not arise merely from ?obligations to one another and to future generations? but from our obligation to the Creator, whose will has determined the right ordering of our natural and reciprocal human relationships. Nor are our rights simply ?wrapped up in the rights of others.? They derive from the debt that, in our very being, we owe to God, who is the transcendent source of the law that supersedes the artifacts of human will.

Matthew Morrison on Will's Wedding, a "Big Feud" and His "Rejuvenated" Return to Glee

Last week, millions of Glee fans were shocked - and more than a little horrified - to see Finn (Cory Monteith) lay one on Emma (Jayma Mays) days before she ties the knot. And they weren't alone.

"I couldn't believe it. I was like, 'What happened? What did he do?' It just didn't make any sense," Matthew Morrison tells TVGuide.com. "It still kind of doesn't make sense in my mind, but a lot of things in this show are kind of funny."

Despite the brief smooch between the bride and the best man, Thursday's special Valentine's Day episode (9/8c on Fox), entitled "I Do," will feature the long-awaited wedding of Wemma, one of Glee's most beloved on-and-off couples. "It was kind of messed up, but it leaves room for a lot of drama and tension," Morrison says of the kiss. "I think the wedding is going to go pretty smoothly, but I think there will be some aftermath in some episodes to come. ... It's going to be a nice big feud for a couple episodes."

Glee recap: Sound off on Finn, Tina and Santana's big moves

However, it's not just Finn's surprising betrayal that will create drama for the couple. The time apart during Will's months-long exodus to Washington D.C., will prove to be a major hurdle for the couple. "Will and Emma have been apart for so long. ...Their relationship is a little tepid, a little on the rocks. They have to find their way back to each other," Morrison says. "There's some trying to figure out what is the right thing to do and ultimately, it happens how it happens. You have to see it to believe what happens."

Thursday's episode is a particularly big one for Will, who returns after months away from both his fianc?e and his beloved glee kids. "It's a re-introduction of Will," Morrison says. That time away from the grinding Glee schedule had a huge impact on Morrison. "I think everyone on the show needs to have that kind of time off because I came back so rejuvenated and ready to go and I came back and all the crew and cast looked kinda tired," he says. "It was wonderful for my soul and just for getting stuff done in my life. It was a really great time off."

Photos: TV couples that need to break up

The break not only breathed new energy into Morrison but also into his alter-ego, who will (finally!) get back to performing upon his return. "This is some of my favorite stuff that I've ever done on the show," he says. Morrison specifically points to a dance number featured in the March 7 episode. "I get to do this very famous dance that one of my very favorite dancers of all time got to do - it kind of defies gravity. It's just an amazing number," he says. "It's just been a lot of really fun stuff. It's good for me to be able to perform on the show because it's been awhile." (Sadly, no word yet on when, if ever, Mr. Schue will rap again. "I think I need to get my white-boy rapping skills back in check," he jokes.)

Will's return is far from the only one fans can expect for the big V-day ceremony. Most of last year's grads, including Rachel, Kurt, Quinn, Santana and Puck will visit Lima to witness their old teacher tie the knot. "We haven't all been in the same room like that in a while and it was very nostalgic. It was fun having that energy and people you're so familiar with being in the same room, and also it was a chance for some of the old cast members to hang out with some of the new kids in the glee club," Morrison says. "It was a big family reunion."

New photos: Glee is going to the chapel! Who is coming back for Will and Emma's big day?

Morrison says reconnecting with the current glee club kids will be a challenge for Mr. Schue because of heir brief disqualification after Marley's "Gangnam Style" fainting spell. "[He's got to] get them back into shape," he says. And what will he think of how closely Finn followed in Will's footsteps while he was gone? "When I first saw some of his outfits, I was like, 'Oh my gosh,'" Morrison jokes about Finn's sudden penchant for sweater vests. "But Mr. Schue has always been like a father figure to him so I think he learned from his mentor and he was trying to emulate Mr. Schue in a lot of ways."

Trying to emulate his mentor, however, won't excuse last week's lip-lock so easily. "I think it's going to be interesting with Will finding out about the kiss and seeing what their relationship is going to become now," Morrison says. "I think it's going to take a while for them to get back in each other's good graces."

And what about the other pair of lips involved? Even if Will and Emma do say "I do" on Thursday's episode, it sounds like their problems are far from over. However, Morrison is optimistic Wemma can work it out. "In the long run, I hope so because they've been wanting this opportunity for so long and I think the audience has been really longing for this to happen," he says. "I think it would be a great thing for the show and for them."

Glee airs Thursdays at 9/8c on Fox. Do you think Will and Emma should tie the knot? Or do they need to hit the pause button after that smooch?

Step into the Twilight Zone: Day 11 on Mars Time, in Which I Give Myself Cancer

Editor's note: Researchers exploring Mars via rover and satellite have to adapt to the longer day on the Red Planet. Katie Worth, whose Can Earthlings Adapt to the Longer Day on Mars? for Scientific American describes the consequences of sleep-pattern changes, is trying it out herself. Follow her experiences in living on "Mars time" at this blog to see how it affects her sleep and behavior. This post is the fourth in a series. The past few days have been pretty brutal. As my bedtime has sprinted past dawn, my wake-up time has stood its ground. It's like the opposite of a curfew. Instead of my carriage turning into a pumpkin after midnight, my eyes are turning into pumpkin-colored unblinking demons of sleeplessness after noon. Not problematic when I was falling asleep at 5 A.M., but now that my bedtime is past 9 A.M., I'm beginning to fret. The lack of sleep is leading to what I have dubbed "Mars moments." Like last night, when I took the subway home, and absentmindedly got off one stop too soon. Jumped on the next train but zoned out and missed my stop. Had to get off at the following stop and take the next train back, willing myself to pay attention for 60 whole seconds until I could get off. I mean, I'm kind of a space cadet on a good day, but this is ridiculous. Despite my near-perpetual drowsiness, most nights I've managed to stay awake until my Martian bedtime, with the exception of day 9, when I was so tired that I decided to "take a quick nap" at 4 A.M. and woke up fully dressed and teeth unbrushed eight hours later. One part of my brain felt guilty about cheating on my experiment, but it was drowned out by the raucous cheering of every other neuron in my body. One of my most effective methods of staying awake through the long nights is to spend time feeding my inner hypochondriac by researching all the ways living on Mars time may be hastening my demise. Here's the list of terrible things I could be doing to myself this very second: Giving myself cancer. People who routinely stay up all night working and sleep during the day are considerably more susceptible to cancer than their diurnal counterparts. There have been hundreds of studies correlating night shift work with breast cancer, but a growing pile of evidence indicates that shift work is an equal-opportunity carcinogen, happy to help you grow tumors virtually anywhere in your body. Accelerating my future case of diabetes. People who do shift work or who suffer problems like sleep apnea or the not-as-fun-as-it-sounds restless leg syndrome develop more Type 2 diabetes than normies. This analysis compared people's quality and quantity of sleep with the rate they developed diabetes over time. People who slept less than 6 hours a night had 28 percent more relative risk of diabetes--although people sleeping more than 9 hours were even worse off. Those who had trouble staying asleep (inner hypochondriac alert: This means me!) had an 84 percent higher risk of developing the disease than their well-rested counterparts. Adding wrinkles and gray hairs prematurely. This study found that mice exposed to constant light experienced accelerated aging. Rats living in constant light from the age of 25 days until their natural death met that natural death much sooner than rats kept in darkness 12 or 24 hours a day. The good news: A supplement of melatonin nixed this effect. "Procure melatonin tablets" hereby appended to my to-do list. Hurrying down the path toward obesity, mental distress, asthma, arthritis, stroke, and coronary heart disease. In an analysis of 375,000 American adults surveyed in 2009, people who reported themselves most sleep-deprived also had the highest incidences of these other problems. Since eating is my primary defense against falling asleep at 6 A.M., I can personally attest to the relationship between drowsiness and obesity. A bunch of stuff we don't even know about yet. Last June, the American Medical Association recommended that more research be done on the effect of artificial light at night on human health, and more technologies be developed to reduce those health risks. We are engaging in a "man-made self-experiment" by constantly exposing itself to light at night, and as yet we don't fully understand the effects of this exposure, the report stated. And that's just living on Earth time. What about the woman-made self-experiment of living on Mars time? Stay tuned for my next update on Friday. Assuming I survive that long. ? Mophie Juice Pack for the Galaxy S3 - an update

Mophie Juice Pack for Galaxy S3

A few weeks ago we reviewed the Mophie Juice Pack for the Samsung Galaxy S3. Mophie PR was a little surprised that we came away not all that impressed, given that we've sung the praises of its iPhone Juice Pack. In fact, Mophie was concerned that because we'd purchased our first two units from resellers on Amazon (separate resellers, actually), we might well have received counterfeit Juice Packs, leading to the sharp edge at the bottom of the case, as well as a couple of the other more minor gripes we'd had.

Mophie Juice Pack for Galaxy S3Stranger things have happened, so we let Mophie send us a review unit, and it arrived about a week later, on Feb. 8. In the meantime, we purchased a third Mophie Juice Pack -- this time directly from Mophie -- and had it overnighted to us, arriving on Jan. 31.

In all four Galaxy S3 Mophie Juice Packs, there remains a sharp edge on the chin, and that remains our biggest complaint. It's not going to attack you or anything. But it's noticeable, it's uncomfortable, and it makes us want to take a file to the case -- something you should never have to do.

Vascular brain injury greater risk factor than amyloid plaques in cognitive aging

Feb. 11, 2013 ? Vascular brain injury from conditions such as high blood pressure and stroke are greater risk factors for cognitive impairment among non-demented older people than is the deposition of the amyloid plaques in the brain that long have been implicated in conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, a study by researchers at the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at UC Davis has found.

Published online February 11 in JAMA Neurology (formerly Archives of Neurology), the study found that vascular brain injury had by far the greatest influence across a range of cognitive domains, including higher-level thinking and the forgetfulness of mild cognitive decline.

The researchers also sought to determine whether there was a correlation between vascular brain injury and the deposition of beta amyloid (??) plaques, thought to be an early and important marker of Alzheimer's disease, said Bruce Reed, associate director of the UC Davis Alzheimer's Disease Research Center in Martinez, Calif. They also sought to decipher what effect each has on memory and executive functioning.

"We looked at two questions," said Reed, professor in the Department of Neurology at UC Davis. "The first question was whether those two pathologies correlate to each other, and the simple answer is 'no.' Earlier research, conducted in animals, has suggested that having a stroke causes more beta amyloid deposition in the brain. If that were the case, people who had more vascular brain injury should have higher levels of beta amyloid. We found no evidence to support that."

"The second," Reed continued, "was whether higher levels of cerebrovascular disease or amyloid plaques have a greater impact on cognitive function in older, non-demented adults. Half of the study participants had abnormal levels of beta amyloid and half vascular brain injury, or infarcts. It was really very clear that the amyloid had very little effect, but the vascular brain injury had distinctly negative effects."

"The more vascular brain injury the participants had, the worse their memory and the worse their executive function -- their ability to organize and problem solve," Reed said.

The research was conducted in 61 male and female study participants who ranged in age from 65 to 90 years old, with an average age of 78. Thirty of the participants were clinically "normal," 24 were cognitively impaired and seven were diagnosed with dementia, based on cognitive testing. The participants had been recruited from Northern California between 2007 to 2012.

The study participants underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) ? to measure vascular brain injury ? and positron emission tomography (PET) scans to measure beta amyloid deposition: markers of the two most common pathologies that affect the aging brain. Vascular brain injury appears as brain infarcts and "white matter hyperintensities" in MRI scans, areas of the brain that appear bright white.

The study found that both memory and executive function correlated negatively with brain infarcts, especially infarcts in cortical and sub-cortical gray matter. Although infarcts were common in this group, the infarcts varied greatly in size and location, and many had been clinically silent. The level of amyloid in the brain did not correlate with either changes in memory or executive function, and there was no evidence that amyloid interacted with infarcts to impair thinking.

Reed said the study is important because there's an enormous amount of interest in detecting Alzheimer's disease at its earliest point, before an individual exhibits clinical symptoms. It's possible to conduct a brain scan and detect beta amyloid in the brain, and that is a very new development, he said.

"The use of this diagnostic tool will become reasonably widely available within the next couple of years, so doctors will be able to detect whether an older person has abnormal levels of beta amyloid in the brain. So it's very important to understand the meaning of a finding of beta amyloid deposition," Reed said.

"What this study says is that doctors should think about this in a little more complicated way. They should not forget about cerebrovascular disease, which is also very common in this age group and could also cause cognitive problems. Even if a person has amyloid plaques, those plaques may not be the cause of their mild cognitive symptoms."

Other study authors include Natalie Marchant of UC Berkeley and the Buck Institute for Research on Aging; Roxana Dhada and William Jagust of UC Berkeley; Charles DeCarli and Dan Mungas of UC Davis; Stephen Kriger and Micheal Weiner of UC San Francisco and Nerses Sanossian, Wendy Mack and Helena Chui of the University of Southern California.

The research was supported by grants number AG012435, AG00266 and AG10129 from the National Institutes of Health.

Mesothelioma Cancer | mesothelioma Sources and Information

Mesothelioma cancer is often caused by exposure to asbestos. People who have received asbestos exposure of as little as one or two months to very low doses are at risk of mesothelioma cancer. A person exposed to asbestos could develop mesothelioma after 50 years of exposure. The 2 common types of mesothelioma are pleural mesothelioma (lung cancer) and peritoneal mesothelioma (abdomen organs).

There are no immediate symptoms of mesothelioma cancer. The symptoms of mesothelioma may appear in 30 ? 50 years after exposure to asbestos.

Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma cancer: shortness of breath and pain in the chest.

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma cancer: abdominal pain and weight loss, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia and fever.

Please note that these symptoms may be due to other reasons.

Treatment Options for Mesothelioma Cancer
Following are the options for mesothelioma treatment:

  1. Radiation therapy
  2. Chemotherapy
  3. Surgery
  4. Photodynamic therapy

Radiation or chemotherapy combined with surgery may increase the survival time by double.

Phone cos: Cell service holding up after storm

(AP) ? Cellphone companies say their networks are largely up and running after a blizzard dumped up to 3 feet of snow on New England.

Not all cell towers have backup power, so natural disasters can take out cell service through power outages. Last fall's Superstorm Sandy had a major impact on cell service in flooded areas of the Northeast.

This week's snowstorm had much less effect. AT&T Inc. says the "vast majority" of its cell towers in the hardest-hit states are operating fine, and work is under way to restore service in some areas. Verizon Wireless, which prides itself on providing backup power to nearly all sites, says its network is performing well. Sprint Nextel Corp. says the storm's impact was "minimal."

Enjoying the Unique Flavors of Life: First Book in The Family Tree ...

I'm very excited about this blog hop. Mainly because it deals with first.

First kiss,
First love,
First time you've lost some one close.

I started this book after my mother died. I had never lost someone close and the pain was more than I could have imagined.

As a new writer at the time, I spent my days working on stories. This one help me come to term with my loss.

The fictional story?is of a spiritual nature. I had just read Sylvia Brown's book about spiritual guides so I found myself thinking about the family member who had passed before me.

So I developed a family where the orginal settlers in colonial times?from the state of Ohio where the spiritual guides?of a special member of their family in today's time. The person is the keeper of the Winston Estate.

Now, think about this. Would you like having your great, great, great, great grandfather telling you how to live your life?

Yes, he might understand things better than you do but would you want him judging your every move?

In "Summer's Growth," the family spirits have decided to change out the keeper. Mattie has been doing the job for over twenty years and the spirits feel it's time to get on with her life.

Amber is a young woman, who doesn't even know this leg of the family exist and is contacted to come for a visit. Would you go if someone claim you where going to inherit an estate?

As you can see this is a story of intrigue and mystery with strong paranormal elements. I love romance so could leave that out either.

Strangely as I was writing?the book,?I felt as if the spirits where talking to me guiding me as to what to write. Okay, I'm a writer and the character in our heads talk to us.

Fighter turns Gumby after he gets knocked out

(Updated with quotes from Reuter via telephone at 6:38 p.m. ET on Feb. 8, 2013)

Collin Reuter's knockout of Gerald Fike on Feb. 1 in Fairbanks, Alaska, wasn't nearly as violent as the one Uriah Hall scored on Adam Cella on Episode 3 of "The Ultimate Fighter." The Hall knockout was promoted heavily for more than a week by the UFC and FX and was definitely worth the hype.

Reuter's knockout was pretty run of the mill, particularly compared to Hall's. But Fike's fall, in which he lands on his head, may go down as the most unique fall ever after a KO.

Early in the first round, Reuter caught Fike on the head with a right hand during a bout on the Solid As A Rock Fighting Championship card. That was enough to end the bout at just 26 seconds nd get the crowd into it.

It wasn't the punch, though, that was so memorable. Instead, it was Fike's reaction. He fell backward after taking the shot. As he did, he arched his back. He thus hit the canvas first with his head. His feet were firmly on the ground, but his legs, butt and back were off the mat.

Fike looked like he was doing some sort of gymnastics routine but, sadly for him, he was out cold, just like Cella was after Hall caught him in the face with a spinning back kick.

Reuter told Cagewriter via Twitter that Fike was unhurt.

"I spoke with him a few days ago and he said he was perfectly fine," Reuter wrote.

Fike couldn't be reached for comment. We can only assume he was massaging his neck.

Reuter (@CollinReuter) is a single father who used to train with Team Alpha Male in Sacramento, Calif. He drew with Reuter in 2010 in a fight he said he took on short notice.

He said he knew when he landed the punch that Fike probably wasn't going to get up. He struggled with how to react after the punch landed just below the nose.

"It was kind of a mixed reaction from me," Reuter said. "I was really happy and smiling, because that was a big win for me, but I was definitely concerned for [Fike]. I didn't want to be celebrating too much with that going on."

Reuter said Fike was down for about two minutes before he was able to sit back up on the stool.

Linden Schaffer: 5 Tips for Staying Well During Hibernation Season

In the cold-weather months when daylight wanes and snowflakes and blustery weather keep you indoors, you should not sacrifice your health and well-being just because you feel the familiar tug of hibernation. While hibernation is an essential part of some animals' survival strategy, you can stave off the feelings of the winter blues and keep your spirits high by taking care of your body with a few simple wellness tips.

1) Sleep Longer -- Honor your circadian rhythm, which responds to your environment's light and darkness. In the wintertime when the sun sets around 6 p.m., use this as a reminder to wind down. Leave your work at the office, keep the lights in your home dim and give into those feelings of sleepiness. Creating a sanctuary of calm in your bedroom with cozy blankets and your favorite pillow will have you dreaming in no time.

2) Sip Tea -- Chamomile, Earl Grey, oolong, the list goes on, as do the benefits. Want to stay warm and prevent the flu this season? Stock up on green tea. Improve your antioxidants and reduce your risk of coronary heart disease by drinking three cups of black tea a day. In the UK, the Tea Advisory Panel commissioned a study that concluded that tea is just as hydrating as water. So no matter your favorite flavor, put the kettle on and warm your hand around a mug.

3) Add Spice -- If tucking into comfort food is the first thing you like to do at the hint of cold weather, considering adding some spices to your recipes. Cilantro is an important spice in the ayurvedic diet, and is used as a medicinal herb to aid digestion. Dr. Michael Murray, a natural medicine doctor and author of The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods, suggests trying nutmeg, which may encourage sleep by mirroring the effect of serotonin. Combat your irritable mood or low-level depression by sprinkling turmeric in your dish for a quick pick-me-up.

4) Take a Steam -- If the idea of heading to the beach makes you feel instantly relaxed but you just can't get away, head into a sauna or steam room this winter instead. While sweating it out in a heated room has not shown any medical benefits to the body, the de-stressing and relaxation effects may be just what your body ordered.

5) Curl Up With a Book -- Have you been meaning to catch up on the classics, or did you buy a beach read that sat in your bag on the sand? Substitute a night of TV watching to focus instead on sharpening your memory and concentration with a literary romp. You might be surprised to learn that cracking open that hardcover may even make you smarter by expanding your vocabulary and cultural sensitivity.

Shorinji Kempo: More Than a Martial Art ? - Black Belt

Shorinji Kempo: More Than a Martial Art

Editor?s Note: This article first appeared in the May 1978 issue of Black Belt.

At a recent karate exhibition, a high-ranked black belt demonstrated his ?art? to a college audience. On command, his assistant lunged with a front punch.

?Now, see what I do,? the instructor said, grinning. He twisted and executed an eye gouge, then hurled the assistant to the floor and enthusiastically stomped on his solar plexus.

?We don?t mess around,? he boasted. Several members of the audience walked out. The demonstration was typical of the terror-of-the-street attitude in much of the American martial arts. Maybe sports and self-defense are all Americans require of the arts. Perhaps the spirit of budo isn?t relevant anymore. But fluctuating attendance at dojo across the country indicates that something is missing. If philosophy is that missing element, then shorinji kempo may become popular.

Shorinji kempo? You may have heard it mentioned as a legendary martial art or read about it in texts on judo and karate as an ancient Chinese-temple style. But shorinji kempo lives, and, what?s more, it?s growing. Thousands of Japanese practice it in more than 800 training halls. It?s spread through every major Japanese university and many of the nation?s high schools. The popularity is growing in Europe, as well, and that leads to the question, When will it come to the United States?

Download your FREE Guide to judo!
The Neil Adams Guide to Judo Throws

Currently, only a handful of qualified instructors teach the art here. Ken Ohashi, a black belt, is one of them. He describes his relationship with the shorinji organization as ?very close.? He makes regular trips back to the headquarters at Tadotsu, Japan, where they?re not quite sure how to promote it in America.

?We are under strict instruction from headquarters about the promotion of shorinji kempo here,? he says. ?They have been very active and aggressive in Japan but haven?t yet decided what to do in the United States. There are certain barriers in terms of culture.?

What barriers? Karate, judo and a host of other martial arts came to the United States and thrived. But a difference arises in philosophy. Shorinji kempo cannot be transplanted to America without its philosophy. America is a nation of fast food and sensationalized techniques. And Americans often lack patience. We like to be entertained. Are we ready for a heavily philosophical martial art? The monks at the shorinji headquarters wonder.

Yes, monks. Philosophy figures so powerfully in shorinji kempo that the Japanese government registered it as a religion. Doshin So, the founder of modern shorinji kempo, calls this philosophy Kongo Zen.

?Kongo Zen is a philosophy that turns inward as well as radiating outward,? he wrote. ?[It] combines gentleness with hardness and compassion with strength.?

Shorinji kempo represents the physical, active aspects of Kongo Zen. To Doshin So, shorinji kempo isn?t just another empty-hand fighting art, but a whole way of life. Ohashi describes Kongo Zen as a ?revitalization of fundamental, original ideas of Buddhism. It is rational and has nothing to do with mysticism or life after death.?

They believe that in an ever-changing universe, responsibility for man?s future lies with himself. He must be wise enough to know what?s right and strong enough to enforce it. The ideas relate directly to the precepts of Buddhism.

Accordingly, Doshin So traces the philosophy and fighting techniques of shorinji kempo to India 5,000 years ago. They were imported into China and eventually institutionalized at the famous Shaolin Ssu. Shorinji means ?Shaolin Temple? in Japanese. The priests at Shorinji practiced kempo as a form of meditation. To them, it provided a means of spiritual training first and a method of self-defense second.

For this reason, philosophy and meditation remain central to modern shorinji kempo. Without the ordering principles of Kongo Zen, it would be an empty gesture. The fighting techniques and teaching methods themselves express the philosophy.

?All the techniques are constructed so they can?t be used aggressively,? Ohashi says. ?They are geared to getting out of the way of an attack and then controlling the attacker.? Submission techniques take precedence over killing techniques.

Like in aikido, the wrist- and arm-twisting motions of shorinji kempo can paralyze an assailant with pain without inflicting permanent damage.

?We never talk about killing techniques,? Ohashi says. ?Killing somebody is the extreme opposite to our philosophy. It may be necessary to control somebody, but it should never go beyond that. Shorinji kempo is communication. You can?t communicate with somebody once he?s dead.?

The teaching methods illustrate this aspect for others. Practice revolves around embu, or two-man kata. According to Doshin So, practice with a partner encourages respect and understanding for other people. Until you play the guinea pig and get on the receiving end of a technique, you?ll never fully understand its effect.

?If a student becomes aware that he can?t develop without a partner, then he will also realize that he can?t exist without others,? Ohashi says.

Soon the shorinji kempo practitioners at Tadotsu may decide to take action and promote their art in the United States. If they do, they won?t abandon their philosophy along the way. Doshin So believes the philosophical aspect of shorinji kempo accounts for its immense popularity with Japanese youth. Perhaps they?re not so different from American youth.

Officials at the Shorinji headquarters will carefully watch Ohashi and other stateside shorinji kempo instructors to monitor American reaction to their art. If it?s positive, they?ll promote shorinji kempo heavily in America.

Many people seem satisfied with the state of the martial arts in the United States. Sports and self-defense are enough for most people. But for those who are turned off by fighting method alone and are looking for something more, shorinji kempo may be the answer.

LONDON (Reuters) - Actress Mariel Hemingway hopes going public in a documentary about the curse that has plagued her family will finally dispel any mystery around their battles with addiction and raise awareness about mental illness. For years, Hemingway ignored the drinking, addiction and mental illness that coursed through her family, leading several relatives to take their own lives. New British Antarctic research base travels on skis

The British Antarctic Survey's Halley VI Research Station stands on stilts with skis, allowing the station to stay one step ahead of the continent's shifting ice and stormy weather. ?

By Raphael Satter,?Associated Press / February 6, 2013

The British Antarctic Survey's Halley VI Research Station sits on the edge of the South Atlantic Ocean, in April 2012. Researchers say that Britain's new Antarctic base will be movable ? capable of sliding across the ice on ski-clad stilts.

British researchers have unveiled a futuristic Antarctic research base that can move, sliding across the frozen surface to beat the shifting ice and pounding snow that doomed its predecessors.

The British Antarctic Survey said Wednesday that the?Halley?VI Research Station is the sixth facility to occupy the site on the Brunt Ice Shelf ? a floating sheet of ice about 10 miles (16 kilometers) from the edge of the South Atlantic.

Most of the previous stations were crushed under the weight of the polar snow, while?Halley?V had to be abandoned due to fears that the station would be lost if the ice sheet split apart, survey spokesman Paul Seagrove said in a telephone interview. He said this fate "illustrates the problem of constructing research stations on moving ice."

Halley?VI, designed by London-based Hugh Broughton Architects, looks like something out of a "Star Wars" movie. The station is composed of a series of four-legged modules linked by enclosed walkways. Triple-glazed windows help trap heat, a vacuum drainage system keeps water consumption down, and the ski-clad stilts keep the units about 4 meters (13 feet) above the level of the ice. If the station needs to be moved, the modules are disconnected and then towed to a new location, Seagrove said.

The station was built over four years because engineers could only work for a nine-week period during the Antarctic summer. The total cost of the station was nearly 26 million pounds (about $40 million).

Halley, named for astronomer Edmond?Halley, has served as a scientific research site for more than 50 years. The British Antarctic Survey said the region has served as "an important natural laboratory" for studies of the Earth's magnetic field, its near-space atmosphere, and climate change.

9 dead, villages destroyed in Solomons tsunami

SYDNEY (AP) ? Aid workers struggled to reach remote, tsunami-ravaged villages in the Solomon Islands and the death toll rose to at least nine as more bodies were found in wrecked homes and debris in the South Pacific country. A strong aftershock rocked the islands Friday morning.

The victims, including a child, were killed when a powerful earthquake set off a small tsunami that sent 1.5-meter (5-foot) waves roaring inland on Santa Cruz Island, in the eastern Solomons, on Wednesday. Around 100 homes across five villages were damaged or destroyed.

The waves proved deadly for five elderly villagers and a child, who weren't fast enough to outrun the rushing water, said George Herming, a spokesman for the prime minister. Three more bodies were found Thursday, but Herming said details of how those victims died were not immediately available.

Several others are missing and dozens of strong aftershocks were keeping frightened villagers from returning to the coast, Herming said.

"People are still scared of going back to their homes because there's nothing left, so they are residing in temporary shelters on higher ground," Herming said.

The tsunami was generated by an 8.0-magnitude earthquake that struck near the town of Lata, on Santa Cruz in Temotu, the easternmost province in the Solomons.

Disaster officials were en route to the isolated area Thursday after the local airport, which was flooded by the tsunami, was finally cleared of debris.

Another jolt that registered a magnitude of 6.6 hit near Santa Cruz at 5:59 a.m. Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. No tsunami alert was issued. There were no immediate reports of further damage or casualties.

Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo was on a plane to Santa Cruz to assess damage Friday morning when the aftershock hit, said Silas Lilo, a spokesman for the Prime Minister's office. The plane was forced to return to the capital Honiara.

The Solomons comprise more than 200 islands with a population of about 552,000 people. They lie on the "Ring of Fire" ? an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones that stretches around the Pacific Rim and where about 90 percent of the world's quakes occur.

More than 50 people were killed and thousands lost their homes in April 2007 when a magnitude-8.1 quake hit the western Solomon Islands, sending waves crashing into coastal villages.
