Noreen has been named to the ID40, citing her as one of the 40 most important people shaping design internationally. She is a frequent competition judge and lecturer.

Interior Design: James Radin

In his more than 30 years of professional experience, James has had the good fortune to have worked for both leading designers and amazing clients. James began his career on the commercial end of the business in San Francisco at Gensler working along side of Orlando Diaz-Azcuy. He then moved to New York after accepting a position with Swanke Hayden Connell Architects. After several years with the firm, James switched his design focus to residential and began working with Angelo Donghia and later at the office of Thierry Despont. Moving back to Los Angeles, James opened his own firm and continues to focus primarily on residential work. While here he has also had the opportunity to design several film sets including the blockbuster hits Something?s Gotta Give, The Holiday and It?s Complicated.

Urban Design: Jay Griffith

The firm of Griffith & Cletta is well respected in Venice where Jay's home and studio lie just on blocks apart. Over the years, he has made valuable contributions to improve the Venice community, such as helping to found, sponsor, landscape and fundraise more than $1 million for the Las Doradas Children Center. With combined schooling that draws from UCLA, Art Center & the Instituto Allende in Mexico, the firm has a vast art historical and multicultural perspective. The designs reflect a desire to remove the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. The desire is cultivated by the climate and lifestyle of California. As a lover of the California countryside, the firm often use native plants in the garden designs. One of the concerns is creating climatically correct gardens. Another trademark of the firms style is site-specific designs, recycling on-site materials, and blending form and function to create original and dramatic designs.

Art: Kenny Scharf

Kenny was born 1958 in Los Angeles, CA and currently lives there today. He graduated in 1980 with a B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts in New York, NY. His objective: "My ambition as a professional artist is to maintain the course that I set nearly 20 years ago by establishing my work in the fields of painting, sculpture, and performance. Every project I undertake is building on my past experiences. My original approach is unchanged; it is a personal challenge to produce the best work possible every time. One very important and guiding principle to my work is to reach out beyond the elitist boundaries of fine art and connect to popular culture through my art. My personal ambition has always been to live the example. I believe the artist has a social responsibility to engage others in a thought process that ultimately brings art into everyday life thereby enhancing the quality of our experience."

Photography: Tim Griffith

Tim Griffith has been photographing architecture and design-related images for more than twenty five years. Melbourne born and working from bases in San Francisco and Singapore, he travels extensively on assignments in Asia, Europe and North America for a number of the world's leading design firms. His inventive and graphic images are widely published in a diverse range of international design journals, housed in several private and public collections and sought after by architectural, corporate and advertising clients around the world.

Each year, the PDC also recognizes some of the up-and-coming talent in the industry with the Stars on the Rise Awards. Here's a look at the three winners:

Bonesteel Trout Hall: Heidi Bonesteel, Michele Trout and Jill Hall (interior design firm)

Heidi Bonesteel is full of surprises. She?s up for any adventure and embraces the unexpected in her life and in her design projects. She believes that a space should be as unique and fun as the people who occupy it and strives to bring that kind of authentic creativity to her clients. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara and later received her Interior and Environment Design Certificate at UCLA. She apprenticed for a residential interior design firm which exposed her to some of the most exciting residential projects at the time. She joined Hannah Gordon Design, a high-end residential design firm in 1994 and later became partner. Heidi partnered with Michele and Jill to form Bonesteel Trout Hall in 2004.

Michele Trout began to develop her design sensibilities during the year she spent living in Europe after completing her Bachelor of Arts at Pepperdine University. She embraced the tradition and beauty that permeated everything around her, but missed the casual elegance of her native California. Her desire to combine those elements grew as she pursued her Interior and Environmental Design Certificate at UCLA. While at UCLA, Michele worked for hospitality design firms such as Wilson & Associates and James Northcutt Associates. She worked at Barry Design Associates for six years, leaving as a senior designer. She joined Hannah Gordon Design in 2002 and partnered with Heidi and Jill to form Bonesteel Trout Hall in 2004.

Down to her core, Jill Hall is a competitive athlete. She is tenacious, determined and exactly the person you want in your corner if you like things done well and on schedule. Jill received her bachelor degree from UCLA and began her career in the marketing department of a high-end residential homebuilder. She then joined her family?s custom home business where she managed all aspects of finance and client relations. In 1993, she joined and managed Hannah Gordon Design. Her business background offers her clients a level of detail and follow-through that ensures painlessly successful interior projects.

Oliver M. Furth (Interior Design)

Oliver is a native of Los Angeles and a fourth-generation Californian. He has had design in his heart from a very young age. He entered the industry at 15, working in an architectural office after school. At the time, Oliver was attending the prestigious Crossroads School for the Arts. He went on to study Industrial Design, at Art Center College in Pasadena; then Architecture and Art History, at The University of Colorado. In 1999, Oliver joined the Decorative Arts department at Christies Auction house, and latr worked under an array of noteable designers, architects and tastemakers, on both coasts, before opening his own firm in 2005.

Azadeh Shladovsky(furniture and interior design)

Founder of eponymous multidisciplinary, Azadeh Shladovsky has emerged as a designer best known for her artful, empathetic interiors. With architectural styles ranging from traditional to contemporary, and lifestyles that vary from casual to refined, what defines Shladovsky?s aesthetic is the ability to distill the elements of a space and create depth in the way interiors are experienced. Unlike many formulaic designers, Shladovsky?s design philosophy is ever evolving. Her inquisitive perspective is grounded in a rich and diverse life experience, a multicultural upbringing and travel experiences that have made Shladovsky an observer of the world, appreciating details that are commonly overlooked. Translating the details into ?meaningful moments and experiences,? as Shladovsky says, is the intention of every project she undertakes. As a designer without creative limitations, Shladovsky?s projects encompass residential, commercial and retail environments, as well as furniture design.

The annual dinner is hosted by Charles S. Cohen, president and owner of the Pacific Design Center, and takes place on Wednesday night at the famous Red Seven restaurant with cuisine by Chef Wolfgang Puck.

This event is private, by invitation only.

Shawkat Ahmed, Chief Commercial Officer, Yahsat

Al Yah Satellite Communications Company, Yahsat (http://www.yahsat.ae), the Abu Dhabi based satellite operator, is offering new YahClick business subscribers a free satellite modem and dish as well as free installation as part of its commitment to deliver affordable, reliable and high speed internet connectivity for businesses in Tanzania.

Running only until stocks last, this special offer enables subscribers to benefit from signing up to any YahClick Business service plan in Tanzania via YahClick Service Partners Infinity. As part of the promotion, subscribers will only be charged the monthly subscription fee and not for the equipment or installation, a saving of up to $1100.

Launched in late 2012, the YahClick service provides satellite broadband internet connectivity to businesses, home users, government entities, and non-governmental organisations, helping bridge the technological gap for unserved and underserved communities.

?YahClick has been received well in Tanzania and we are now in a position to offer new business users free satellite equipment when they sign up to YahClick, significantly reducing the cost of obtaining a highly reliable, high performance broadband solution. Businesses have a lot to worry about, and good quality, affordable broadband shouldn?t be one of these worries. YahClick is designed to help drive regional economic development and empower individuals and communities to achieve their dreams, regardless of their location,? stated Shawkat Ahmed, Chief Commercial Officer, Yahsat.

In Tanzania YahClick business subscription prices range from $154 excluding local tax ? for speeds ranging from one Megabit per second, up to 15 Megabits per second, with free equipment and installation on all these business subscription plans. In addition to subscription plans suitable for businesses, Infinity offers a series of affordable YahClick service plans to address the needs of home users at speeds up to 10 Megabits per second.

?For the first time in Tanzania, small businesses and even home users can enjoy high performance internet at prices they can afford. This is truly a technological breakthrough. While satellite internet has been around in Africa for a long time, it was always reserved for high end corporates and governments. Today, YahClick broadband satellite internet brings even higher connectivity speeds to the remote parts of the country and over the harshest terrains.? YahClick is a powerful broadband solution that will help users in a wide range of industries benefit from improved digital communication, ensuring residents and businesses access to 21st century technology that will power the country?s economic development.? adds Ahmed.

Tanzania?s internet infrastructure has developed significantly over the last decade, absorbing newer and faster technologies; affordable satellite broadband internet is the next step in bridging the digital divide. The introduction of YahClick is designed to provide high speed reliable broadband internet to everyone regardless of the reach of the current terrestrial infrastructure in their location.

YahClick is designed to provide satellite broadband internet to everyone and is set to enable new business opportunities and connectivity to a wide range of industries, NGOs, government, education organisations and home users throughout its coverage area by providing reliable, high-bandwidth internet connectivity to urban, rural and remote communities.

(AP) ? A judge struck down New York City's pioneering ban on big, sugary drinks Monday just hours before it was supposed to take effect, handing a defeat to health-minded Mayor Michael Bloomberg and creating confusion for restaurants that had already ordered smaller cups and changed their menus.

State Supreme Court Justice Milton Tingling said the 16-ounce limit on sodas and other sweet drinks is too arbitrary because it applies to only some sugary beverages and some places that sell them.

"The loopholes in this rule effectively defeat the stated purpose of this rule," Tingling wrote in a victory for the beverage industry, restaurants and other business groups that called the rule unfair and wrong-headed.

Further, the Bloomberg-appointed Board of Health went beyond its authority in approving the size limit, the judge said, agreeing with the critics that the matter should have been up to the elected City Council.

The city vowed to appeal the ruling, issued by New York state's trial level court. But for now, it means the ax won't fall Tuesday on supersized sodas, sweetened teas and other high-sugar beverages in restaurants, movie theaters, corner delis and sports arenas.

"The court ruling provides a sigh of relief to New Yorkers and thousands of small businesses in New York City that would have been harmed by this arbitrary and unpopular ban," the American Beverage Association and other opponents said, adding that the organization is open to other "solutions that will have a meaningful and lasting impact."

The city expressed confidence that it would win on appeal.

"This measure is part of the city's multi-pronged effort to combat the growing obesity epidemic, which takes the lives of more than 5,000 New Yorkers every year, and we believe the Board of Health has the legal authority ? and responsibility ? to tackle its leading causes," said Michael A. Cardozo, the city's corporation counsel.

The first of its kind in the country, the restriction has sparked reaction from city streets to late-night talk shows, celebrated by some as a bold attempt to improve people's health and derided by others as another "nanny state" law from Bloomberg during his 11 years in office.

On his watch, the city has compelled chain restaurants to post calorie counts, barred artificial trans fats in restaurant food and prodded food manufacturers to use less salt. The city has successfully defended some of those initiatives in court.

Because of the limits of city authority and exemptions made for other reasons, the ban on supersized beverages doesn't cover alcoholic drinks or many lattes and other milk-based concoctions, and it doesn't apply at supermarkets or many convenience stores ? including 7-Eleven, home of the Big Gulp.

The rule, if upheld, would create an "administrative leviathan," warned Tingling, who was elected to the state Supreme Court bench in 2001 as a Democrat.

In defending the rule, city officials point to the city's rising obesity rate ? about 24 percent of adults, up from 18 percent in 2002 ? and to studies tying sugary drinks to weight gain. Care for obesity-related illnesses costs government health programs about $2.8 billion a year in New York City alone, according to city Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley.

"Without a portion cap on sugary drinks, it would be harder to tackle an obesity epidemic that kills more New Yorkers than anything other than smoking and causes misery for many thousands more who suffer from heart disease, diabetes and other debilitating illnesses," Farley said after the ruling.

Critics said the measure is too limited to have a meaningful effect on New Yorkers' waistlines. And they said it would take a bite out of business for the establishments that had to comply, while other places would still be free to sell sugary drinks in 2-liter bottles and supersize cups.

Beverage makers had expected to spend about $600,000 changing bottles and labels, movie theater owners feared losing soda sales that account for 10 percent of their profits, and delis and restaurants would have had to change inventory, reprint menus and make other adjustments, according to court papers.

The city had said that while restaurant inspectors would start enforcing the soda size rule in March, they wouldn't seek fines ? $200 for a violation ? until June.

Some restaurants had already ordered and started using smaller glasses for full-sugar soda, while others began experimenting with freshly squeezed juices as alternatives to soda for children's parties. Dunkin' Donuts shops have been telling customers they will have to sweeten and flavor their own coffee. Coca-Cola has printed posters explaining the rules.

The ruling "serves as a major blow to Mayor Michael Bloomberg's incessant finger-wagging," said J. Justin Wilson at the Center for Consumer Freedom, created by restaurants and food companies. "The court confirmed what most New Yorkers already know: They don't need a government regulator to dictate their diet choices. New Yorkers should celebrate this victory by taking a big gulp of freedom."

Jose Perez, a fifth-grade special education teacher in Manhattan who was getting a hot dog and can of soda from a street vendor, called the ruling "dead-on."

"Really, I think it's just big government getting in the way of people's rights," he said. "I think it's up to the person. If they want to have a giant soda, that's their business."

STEricsson CEO steps down without a named successor

ST-Ericsson was already in some tumult after the ST half of the partnership said it was exiting the venture late last year. As we're discovering, there was a little more drama in store for 2013. CEO Didier Lamouche has resigned from the company for a tempting job prospect elsewhere, and there's no named replacement for him so far -- a slight problem when Lamouche will be out by March 31st. He's leaving ST-Ericsson in a better state than he found it, as the company is scoring key deals for phones like the Galaxy S III Mini while getting its LTE chip plans on track. Nonetheless, we suspect that remaining owner Ericsson will want that power vacuum filled quickly when there's already enough uncertainty ahead.

Mattis wants 13K troops staying in Afghanistan

The top U.S. commander for the Afghanistan-Pakistan region has recommended to President Obama that 13,600 American troops stay in Afghanistan after 2014, a number that is potentially higher than what the administration wants to leave in the country.

At a NATO meeting in February, then-Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said up to 12,000 troops could stay behind, but not all of those would be American troops necessarily. But Gen. James Mattis, head of the U.S. Central Command, revealed the new recommendation to the Senate Armed Service Committee on Tuesday at a hearing.

relationship fears if bi - Empty Closets - A safe online community for ...

hey everyone!

I have come to realize I may be gay, due to gay thoughts and a little bit of physical arousal around guys. Not mental though I don't get horny, but physically I am slightly aroused, but that may change over time.

I refuse to live in denial so I am going to try my hardest to accept the feelings and make them feel good. Id like to be able to say I'm a proud gay, or bi, man. At my age in college being tied down by a wife and kids doesn't sound so fun, so i wouldn't want to live a lie just to have a "normal" life.

I definitely have a stronger pull towards women atm, I always have, and am physically and mentally aroused by them. I always notice girls first, I cant help it, but if I see and extremely muscular shirtless guy I will also notice them.

Right now I want to date a girl, but my fear is that I will not be able to make her happy. My fear is is that I will realize I do not want a relationship with a girl and break her heart, or will not be good at sex, or will realize I wont enjoy it.

But then I think if that happens I will decide to try men out, and the same will happen.

following what my heart says doesn't work so well due to the fact I have severe anxiety issues. I dont really know what is real desire and what isn't.

So if you are gay/bi how do you go about relationships with men/women if your not sure which one you really desire? Ive read trying one then the other makes it worse, so how do I approach this situation?

Thanks in advance
