Fish food poses salmonella risk to pets, humans | Panish Shea ...

Wardley Advanced Nutrition Perfect Protein Tropical Flake Fish Food has been voluntarily recalled by its manufacturer, the Hartz Mountain Corporation of Secaucus, New Jersey, because of a risk of salmonella contamination.

An unknown number of units of the one ounce variety of this fish food may have come in contact with the foodborne organism Salmonella, known to trigger severe and possibly deadly infections in those with weakened immune systems, as well as children and the elderly.

Animals eating the product can become infected, as well as pet owners who come into contact with it in the course of feeding their fish. The risk for infection becomes significantly higher if the pet owner fails to wash his or her hands after handling the fish food.

The symptoms of salmonella include: stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. There is also a possibility that the organism will enter the circulatory system causing further harm and more serious sickness. The fish food containers affected by this recall, more than 7,000 in all, bear UPC code 0-43324-00591-7, and originated from lot numbers PP34911, PP34912, PP35011 and PP35012.

This potential contamination poses a health threat to both pets and their owners, and as a Fresno personal injury lawyer, I hope this information reaches the public in time to prevent anyone from becoming ill. If you or someone you love has been harmed by a defective or contaminated product please consider consulting a Long Beach personal injury attorney.
